About
Dr. William Gilmer, MD is the board certified ophthalmologist at Riverside Eye Clinic in Port Orange, FL.

He was born and raised in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. After graduation from Fletcher High School in Neptune Beach, Florida, he attended college at Washington Lee University, the ninth oldest college in the nation, graduating with honors.

Dr. Gilmer worked as a youth counselor for the Northwest Youth CorpsU.S. Forest Service in the Rogue River National Forest after graduation from college. He then joined the United States Peace Corps and served two years as a Science and Math High School teacher in the small village of Kumbungu, Northern Region, Ghana, West Africa. While living in Ghana, he founded the school laboratory and organized the construction of several houses for teachers.

After completion of 2 years service in Ghana, Dr. Gilmer moved to Washington, DC where he worked first for the International Institute, working to foster professional and educational exchanges between government officials from the United States, India, South Korea, and Taiwan. He then worked as an Analyst at the Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration; this position required his Department of Defense Top Secret Clearance and the Department of Energy Q Clearance for work involving advanced research at Los Alamos, Sandia, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories.

Dr. Gilmer then attended the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. While at Georgetown, he served as the Student-Faculty Liaison, founded the local Student Sight Savers chapter, founded the Ophthalmology Interest Group, and was the Vice-President of the American Medical Student Association chapter.

Upon graduation from the Georgetown School of Medicine, Dr. Gilmer completed his internship at the Harbor Hospital Medical Center in Baltimore, MD, where he served as the intern class representative to the hospital administration. He completed his Ophthalmology Residency at New York Medical College, St. Vincent's Hospital, Manhattan, serving at Chief Resident in his final year. After residency, he completed a Cornea and External Disease Fellowship at the prestigious Proctor Foundation at the University of California, San Francisco.

While in training, Dr. Gilmer maintained an interest in overseas work, and was fortunate enough to complete two international ophthalmology electives, one at the historic Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa and the other at the Lumbini Eye Institute in Lumbini, Nepal.

Dr. Gilmer has been involved in research throughout his medical training, with recent publications in the British Journal of Ophthalmology and the Archives of Ophthalmology. He became Board Certified in 2012 by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is a Fellow with the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

In 2012, Dr. Gilmer returned to Florida and opened the Riverside Eye Clinic in 2013. In 2006, his father and mother founded the Jesus Clinic in Daytona Beach which works to provide medical care for the uninsured of Volusia County. Dr. Gilmer and his wife were recently blessed with the birth of their first child.

Most recently, Dr. Gilmer became the Ophthalmologist Liaison between the ophthalmologists in the 6th Congressional District Academy of Ophthalmology and the 6th District, member of Congress, Representative DeSantis. Congressional Advocates serve as "key contacts" for their members of Congress so that when important issues come up before the US Congress committeesfloor votesneed for legislation co-sponsors, the Academy can quickly get its messagerequest to targeted members of Congress through direct, personal communication.
