Sanjeev Saksena, MD

Dr. Saksena is Clinical Professor of Medicine at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine, and Medical Director of the Electrophysiology Research Foundation. He has been the Departmental Head and Director of the Cardiovascular Institute at Atlantic Health Systems East from 1999-2004, and Director of the Arrhythmia Pacemaker Service from 1989. He has also been President of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology NASPE and Chair of its Government Relations Committee, and member for governmental affairs committees for the Heart Rhythm Society and the American College of Cardiology. He has been a pioneer in nonpharmacologic therapies for cardiac arrhythmias. He performed the first successful implant of a transvenous defibrillator in 1987, and developed and refined the early algorithms for antitachycardia pacing and transvenous cardioversion for supraventricular and ventricular tachycardia. He developed intraoperative laser ablation of ventricular and supraventricular tachycardias including the WPW syndrome in 1985 to 1987, and was an early pioneer in radiofrequency and laser catheter ablation and as well atrial defibrillation. More recently, he developed dual site right atrial pacing and has been involved in catheter mapping of atrial fibrillation in man, and hybrid therepies for atrial fibrillation.
