Dr. Margaret Alexander has been specializing in the treatment of women with gynecologic cancers for more than 26 years and has developed the reputation of being an extraordinarily gifted doctor with a caring manner.
Dr. Alexander is a graduate of Yale University School of Medicine. She also completed her residency training at Yale New Haven Hospital. Dr. Alexander completed a gynecologic oncology fellowship at Georgetown University and is a board certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist ObGyn and a Fellow of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr Alexander recertifies her credentials annually.
Dr. Alexander is a recipient of numerous awards and recognitions inclusive of the following: A Washingtonian Top Doctor, Bethesda, Top Doctor, Top Obstetricians Gynecologist and Gynecologic Oncologist in America, Top Oncologist in America, Castle Connolly Top Doctors trademark recognizing the top 5 of practicing physicians in the United States of America. Dr. Alexander has lectured nationally and internationally on the Human Papilloma Virus and Vaccine Therapy.
A Gynecologic Oncologist is a physician who is an ObGyn specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of women with cancer of the reproductive organs. After going to medical school for four years and then completing a four year residency program in obstetrics and gynecology, a gynecologic oncologist completes an additional three or four year fellowship specializing in cancers of the reproductive tract. Gynecologic oncologist receive extensive training during this time and gain surgical skills required to properly stage and remove tumors. They also receive extensive training in various chemotherapy and radiation therapy techniques. This training uniquely qualifies gynecologic oncologist to care for women with gynecologic cancers.
Dr. Alexander was the former director of Gynecologic Oncology at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh. She has served on the faculty of Georgetown University and George Washington University. She was a guest researcher at the National Cancer Institute in the early development of the HPV vaccine for cervical cancer. Dr. Alexander has lectured nationally and internationally on gynecologic oncology with a focus on HPV, cervical cancer and vaccine development.
Dr. Alexander is the first woman gynecologic oncologist in the Washington, DC metropolitan area certified to perform da Vinci Robotic assisted laparoscopic gynecologic and gyn-oncologic procedures.
She is also an expert on complex pelvic surgery, abnormal papsmear, colposcopy, uterine fibroids, uterine conservation, surgery for ovarian masses, abnormal uterine bleeding, postmenopausal bleeding, genetic screening, and menopausal management.
As many of her patients have described, the care experience with Dr Alexander as exemplary and this stems from her heart felt commitment and compassion for each of her patients. In her seemingly limitless compassion, she developed a recognition program for all of her cancer survivors to honor their strength and victory through the experiences of their disease and celebration of life.

As the director of Oncology for Women and Alexander Health MD, Dr. Alexander has developed a center to educate, evaluate, and eradicate gynecologic and gynecologic cancer. Some events sponsored by Dr. Alexander include a cancer survivor tea party, a cancer survivor luncheon cruise, and educational seminars about gynecologic wellness, cancer care and cancer prevention.
