My name is Dr. John Mailey and I have been faculty at Michigan State University since 2018. I started in the role of clinical instructor after finishing my masters degree. I took on more responsibility by increasing class loads and was rewarded with a full-time position in 2021. Since then, I began lecturing in addition to clinical instruction in 2022. In December of 2023 I completed my terminal degree Doctor of Nursing Practice DNP. My doctoral project involved an integration of diabetes self-management from a cultural perspective using Leiningers Culture Care Nursing model. I am involved in a student organization called the Men in Nursing serving in the role of student advisor.
My nursing career started in 1994 working with medical-surgical patients. I have been a critical care nurse since 1996 and I have worked with trauma, transplant, CV, neuroscience, vascular, medical, and rapid response patients. I have also been in hospital administration for a number of years. I have an associate degree from Washtenaw community college, a BSN from Oakland University, a masters degree from South University, and a DNP from the University of Michigan.
I have done extensive research and have broad operational knowledge of Rapid response systems RRT implementation and operation. I have published numerous articles on this topic and lectured around the country on implementation of rapid response systems. I addition, I have consulted multiple institutions on starting their own RRTs.
I am a primary care adult gerontological nurse practitioner with interest in working with underserved populations. My professional affiliations Sigma Theta Tau, the Transcultural nursing society, MICAMP, AANP, and AACN. I hold a critical care certification CCRN and taught Advanced Cardiac Life Support ACLS for 10 years.
Nursing runs in my family; I am a third-generation nurse. My mother and sister are also doctoral prepared, Professors, and nurse practitioners. My mother passed in 2018, finishing my terminal degree was the last promise I made to her. I have four granddaughters My favorite hobbies are biking, painting, listening to vinyl, exercising, sport marksmanship, and travel.
