Dr. Akhtar Purvez is now seeing patients at the Pain and Spine Center of Charlottesville.

He is a highly qualified and experienced interventional pain physician who trained in Head and Neck Surgery in India, in Anesthesiology at Boston University, and in Pain Medicine at the University of Virginia. Dr. Purvez is certified by the American Board of Pain Medicine, the American Board of Anesthesiology in Pain Medicine, and the American Board of Disability Analysts. He has been in pain practice since 2002.

He is a member of Spine Intervention Society SIS and American Medical Association AMA

Dr. Purvez has been involved in training physician assistants, medical students, residents, fellows, and other physicians. He was Adjunct Clinical Professor at Lincoln Memorial University, TN, and writes, lectures, and speaks on radio and TV about pain-related issues. He supports pain advocacy, pain policy, training, and research.

His new informative, self-help book on pain titled Chronic Pain Management In An Age of Addiction has been acclaimed widely and is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other places.

Awarded for best bedside manners and rated high at physician review sites, he has been the recipient of many awards including the following: Patients Choice Award 2013-14; Compassionate Doctor Recognition 2013; Top 10 Doctor State 2014 Virginia, Pain Medicine; Top 10 Doctor- Metro Area 2014 Washington Metro Area, Pain Medicine.

He is a pioneer in Peripheral Nerve Stimulations PNS implants for chronic neuropathic pain that have greatly enhanced the tools available for their management.

His special interests include neuropathy and neuralgias, chronic upper and lower back pain, shingles pain, RSDCRPS, radiculopathy, occipital neuralgia and other headaches, chronic pelvic and abdominal pain, and fibromyalgia.
